On our welfare budget, I collected video games from cereal boxes or received pirated MUD games from my
grandfather. For my 11th birthday, I received my first two consoles: a secondhand Playstation 2 and
Nintendo DS. I developed an intense affinity for PS2 surival horror and LucasArts/Sierra Entertainment
style point-and-click adventure games.
I learned HTML and CSS as a preteen through trial and error, painfully coding my way through Myspace and
Tumblr layouts. Riddled with sparkly gifs and custom cursors packaged with unholy amounts of malware,
the web served as a space where I could carve out my own little sanctuary.
Handcrafted sites, with code full of webmaster comments and entirely unstreamlined, capture the
Internet's ability to act as a tool for resistance, not just profit. This website was coded
lovingly by hand, with only the use of HTML, CSS, and vanilla JS. Without the bells and whistles of JS
libraries, my websites are made up entirely of my own code.
Poetry, not product.
